Maker's Monday: Newspaper Animals

As you know, every Monday we like to start our day off with a crafty-type project.  We have found that making morning work fun and engaging really helps our students start the week with a positive attitude!  I love to hear the quiet little cheers when they walk in and read the board.  I hear, "It's maker's Monday! Yes!"  Usually over the weekend, Stefanie and I chat to figure out a good craft-type activity for our class.
The key is that it needs to be:

  • Quick
  • Little Prep
  • Free
We usually hit up Pinterest if we don't already
have anything in mind.  This week we stumbled on these super cute Newspaper Polar Bears from I Heart Crafty Things.  We brought in newspapers (and stole some from the teacher's lunch room) and put the supplies at each group.  We went with blue construction paper backgrounds because it looks great and since it is winter here, our students had the option of adding snow with white crayons.  Each group also received some newspaper, wiggly eyes, sharpies, and a few scraps of black paper.  I posted directions on the board that told my students that they could create any animal they wanted out of the newspaper.  I also requested that they try to use the text part of
the paper rather than the pictures.  They came out great and only took between 15-25 minutes for everyone to finish.
Have a great week!
